AMX-13/90 - or "For what Frenchman does not love to shoot fast?"

Historical background
Design of this tank started in 1946 in a state-run enterprise scheme near Issy-les-Moulineaux. The First prototype was assembled two years later. Production started in 1952 in Rouen (ARE association). At one time a total of 45 tanks were produced per month. At the beginning of the ‘60s production of the AMX-13 was handed over to "Creso Loire" company, as Rouen facility was switched over to production of the AMX-30. Basic chassis of the light tank was used in production of various tanks, including the armored infantry vehicle AMX VCI, 105mm self-propelled howitzer, 155mm self-propelled gun Mk F3 and double-barreled anti-aircraft self-propelled gun OCA, each of them having special features in different modules.
For the past years the AMX-13 (and other vehicles in the same line line) design underwent many changes. In 1964 during renovation a 90mm rifled gun was installed instead of the 75mm. Some of them also had AT-missiles installed on their sides. The ultimate renovation was shown off during the military equipment exhibition in Satori, 1985.The latest version features a new forward body, new diesel engine, automatic transmission and oleo-pneumatic suspension.
"Creso Loire" company claimed that it can renovate all of the previous models up to this standard.
Comparatively the AMX-13 was quite effective in combat causing it to become quite popular. The tank was sold widely around the world. A total of 7700 vehicles were produced, including 3400 exported versions. The AMX-13 tank is currently in service in 10 countries. France, India, Israel, Egypt and some other countries had them withdrawn from service and put on care and maintenance.
The tank has a few interesting features. First of all it is the use of so-called oscillating armor. In contrast to other turrets, oscillating turret consists of 2 parts: lower part, linked with turret the support and upper part, fixed at the lower part on pins in order to rotate in elevation relatively to the lower part at some angle. The gun is fixed to the upper oscillating part of the turret. Elevation aiming is conducted by rotation of upper part of the turret, and traversing - by rotating of lower part. Usage of this simplifies loading automation and decreases size of the turret. In particular, AMX-13 tank has two revolver-type magazines for automatic loading, installed in the upper part of the turret. The usage of automatic loader allows the tank to operate with only 3 crew. Tge Commander stays in the left part of the turret, gunner is in its right part, and driver mechanic is positioned in the hull, in the driver's compartment.
Both of the turret sides are fitted with grenade launchers the ability to launch smoke grenades. They have 12 allotted rounds in ammunition. There are no provisions on the tank for special defensive system against weapons of mass destruction.
"Creso Loire" company developed additional armor for the tank, similar to the one used on the American М113 APC. Its gross weight is 650kg, each block weighs less than 50kg in order to be installed or replaced by the crew with the help of on-vehicle tools. Additional armor is installed on the frontal and side parts of the turret, as well as on frontal section of the hull. This armor provides protection against 20mm armor-piercing rounds, at the distances above 100m at approximately 180°.
The AMX-13 tank mobility is standard for a 2nd generation tank level. Its maximum speed is 60 km/h with 350-400km max range (fuel tank capacity is 480L.) The Vehicle can traverse trenches up to 1.6m wide, vertical walls of up to 0.65m high, fording sites up to 0.6m in depth (No equipment for fording deep sites was created for this tank.), it could traverse slopes with 31° gradient.
Power is provided by a gas-powered 8-cylinder liquid-cooled engine 8Gxb producing 250hp. Allow for a 16.7 HP/t power-weight ratio. Mechanical transmission is manually operated and has 5 forward gears and 1 reverse gear. It has differential steering. Suspension is provided by a torsion-bar, last and first suspension units are fitted with liquid dampers. The Chassis has 5 single-ended rubber-covered suspension wheels and three (sometimes two) return rollers on each side. Tracks lean on the latter ones only with their inner parts. Traction wheels are located at the front, directive wheels with track tension devices - at the rear. Steel tracks350mm wide with open metal hinges have 85 track links. When necessary, tracks can be fitted with rubber cleats for movement on asphalt.
In 1979, during a weapons and military equipment exhibition held in Satori, a new model of the tank with a new diesel engine was rolled out. This vehicle had a 64 km/h maximum speed and fuel consumption around 1 l/km allowing its effective range to increase to 500km As a substitute for the gas-powered engine they considered a 4-cylinder "Puayo" 520 4LCS25 diesel engine with 250 h.p. And a "General Motors" diesel engine with 280 h.p. In 1983 "Baudouin" company offered its 6-cylinder 6F 11SRY diesel engine with 280 h.p.
